Elements & Principles of Art Lesson

Grades 6-8

  • Visual Arts/Creating: VA:Cr1.1.HSI Use multiple approaches to begin creative endeavors.
  • Visual Arts/Creating: VA:Cr1.2.IIa Choose from a range of materials and methods of traditional and contemporary artistic practices to plan works of art and design.
  • Visual Arts/Connecting: VA:Cn10.1.HSI: Document the process of developing ideas from early stages to fully elaborated ideas. 
  • Visual Arts/Responding: VA:Re9.1.HSIII: Construct evaluations of a work of art or collection of works based on differing sets of criteria.
  • Grade 6, VA:Cr1.2.6: Formulate an artistic investigation of personally relevant content for creating art.
  • Grade 6, VA:Cr2.1.6: Demonstrate openness in trying new ideas, materials, methods, and approaches in making works of art and design.
  • Grade 7, VA:Cr2.1.7: Demonstrate persistence in developing skills with various materials, methods, and approaches in creating works of art or design.

BIG IDEA:

  • To learn about the elements of line , color, value and space and how to apply them to create  the principles of rhythm, repetition, pattern in a work of art.

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS:

  • Why are you doing this?
    • To learn how to plan a piece of art using the creative process.
    • To use the elements of art to create principles of art such as repetition/rhythm and unity through the use of repeated lines.
    • To learn about atmospheric perspective and the use of space in a piece of art.
    • To learn about warm and cool color schemes.

OBJECTIVES:  

Students will:

  • Use the creative process by creating thumbnails of line designs and landscape designs.
  • Explore atmospheric perspective through the use of space in art through the use of overlapping shapes, size, color & value.
  • Learn to apply elements of art with good craftsmanship
  • Apply watercolor paint with varying degrees of value.
  • Practice and apply the principle of rhythm through the use of line
  • Complete a student self-evaluation and participate in critique of work
